The making of...Orchid Landscape

During Putrajaya FLORIA last few weeks, Me and my friends (4 of us) were asked to participate in Orchid landscape competition, so I think that it could get us a good exposure for us to get involved in these sort of activities. Well, to begin with, actually we have no experience in creating this temporary landscape whatsoever....though I can design one on paper, but to materialize things, I kinda worried a bit cause how to get the landscape materials from our place to Putrajaya, Its 4 to 5 hours drive from our place..I have to say that I was in doubt at first because this was one of the major competition cause we representing our state. But all ends well.

We did a couple of landscape, one for Perlis, and one for Penang so I have  come out with a different approach on both designs.

Sebenarnya mula-mula OC rasa 'seriau' jugak nak masuk bertanding. Bukan apa Putrajaya tu kan jauh, dah tu pulak tak pernah join pertandingan macam ni pun, selalunya tauke-tauke nurseri saja yang masuk.

This is the coloured drawing that I did for Perlis.

Inilah lanskap yang OC bayangkan untuk Perlis

We were given this barren space, approximately 4x4 metres to work with. Orchids we already have, so we have to find other materials..otherwise the work can't be done..

Hari mula-mula tu dapat la tanah kosong ni anggaran 4x4 meter untuk memulakan kerja, memang kalut, sebab apa kami ada pokok orkid saja, pokok lain, batu, sabut semua tak ada, nak kena cari, kalau tak memang tak boleh buat kerja..

First, we begin to unwrap hundreds of orchids
brought by bus that we hired and put it aside.

Apapun mula-mula kena bukak pokok-pokok orkid ni dulu
dan susun di tepi..

Lucky for us, after asking here and there, we found a nursery that provides garden plants and materials for hire, so more or less we got things that we needed. We have to work until night time..

Nasib baik la, tanya sana, tanya sini, dapat la satu nurseri yang kita boleh sewa pokok-pokoknya, Kalau nak beli, modal. dah la pakai duit sendiri dulu, lepas abis pokok-pokok tu nak letak mana? nak bawa balik bukannya dekat, kos lagi..Hari mula-mula tu kena kerja sampai malam..

We have to work very fast, to catch up with time, cause 4 of us we're doing 2 landscapes. This is the first, and it was already taking shape like the drawing, even though some without the plants that I originally wanted but we have to substitute it with other type plus bougainvilleas have to be added cause its the theme of Floria this year.

A view from the right side, I only use purple and white dendrobiums orchids only,
cause the aim is not to use to many colours.

Another view from the left side..
Satu sudut pandangan yang lain

This is the finished landscape. After 'running here and there' finding materials.
Got a bit of tropical vibe in the design. Cause the use of palms and of course orchid!

Jadi inilah hasilnya, setelah 'berlari' ke sana sini cari bahan.
Rekaan ni ada banyak lah unsur tropika sebab OC guna pokok palma dan orkid semestinya!

The drawing that I did. In this one I wanted to use all white dendrobiums and
variegated ornamental to convey the white theme.

Here, the landscape started to form with the large urn in the center.

Ni masa sedang mengatur pokok-pokok dan prop-prop..

Me and my friend doing the arrangements of the dendrobiums.

Ni OC dengan Omar sedang 'kalut' menyusun orkid..
dah lewat petang dah masa ni..malam OC kena balik Penang..

Almost done..clean up time!

Dah nak siap pun..nak kena 'clear' lah mana yang patut..

A view from one section of the landscape.

I'm using variegated ornamentals to emphasize on the white theme.

White dendrobiums and song of India plants encircling the base of the urn in the center,
with water lettuce and cyperus inside. Actually the cyperus plant was a substitute for the real fountain that I cannot find that day..lol..

Dendrobium putih dan pokok 'Song of India' diletakkan mengelilingi  tempayan besar berisi air. Dalamnya OC letak pokok kiambang dengan Cyperus..kira pokok cyprus tu macam air pancut lah ha..ha.. sebab OC tak dapat cari yang sebenar.

The finished design, but actually I wanted to use topiary style white bougainvillea
instead of palms but it was not available..

Siap!, kalau ikut rekaan sebenar, OC nak guna pokok bunga kertas berbentuk 'topiari' tapi tak ada..
last -last terpaksa ganti dengan pokok palma..apa nak buat tu je yang ada..

And the end results is we didn't win anything..win or lose that is the way of any competition, but looking on the positive side, what I thought was impossibl, are done quite well despite some 'glitches' during the process. Anyway this is our first try with no experience and what judges expectation. Maybe both design are to simple for their taste, not dramatic enough, with less colourful and less variety of orchids used, unlike other competitor, they are more experienced and well equipped with props and everything not to mention the amount of people involved. Overall we enjoyed ourselves and its a good experience for us. Hopefully, given the opportunity, we can do better next time!

Thanks to my friends, Makarimi, Ibrahim and Omar..without you guys this is not possible..We've done our best with what we have this time around. Even though with our limited resources..Finally we did it!

through the graceful bending of their stems and the harmoniously tinted nuances of their blossoms.
Every flower has a cordial word which nature directs towards him.
