Bucket Orchid

          This the first post for the year 2012, this time it's about, in my opinion one of the strangest form of orchid known. Coryanthes, the local name is 'bucket orchid'. This is the species from the lowland of South America that can grow very well in my country..I have a few species right now, speciosa, verruculineata, trifoliata, alborosea and macrantha.  I want to collect more of this bizzare looking orchid..they are so fascinating in their 'weirdness' and free flowering too..though the flower last only for 3 days. The only problem is they are hard to get here in my country..very rare..

          Pos pertama bagi tahun 2012..kali ini berkenaan dengan salah satu spesis orkid yang pada pendapat saya mempunyai bentuk bunga yang paling pelik  iaitu Coryanthes. Spesis ini berasal dari Amerika Selatan..dapat tumbuh dengan baik di negara ini..Saya ada beberapa spesis dalam koleksi iaitu Coryanthes speciosa, verruculineata, trifoliata, alborosea dan macrantha..Spesis ini berbunga tanpa musim.Walaupun bunganya hanya tahan selama 3 hari sebelum mula layu ia tetap menarik kerana bentuknya..Rasanya saya nak buat koleksi lagi untuk orkid spesis ini sebab senang nak menjaganya..cuma yang menjadi halangan ialah susah hendak diperolehi di sini..

 This is Coryanthes speciosa, flowering in my orchid garden, this new year. 

The first picture is the usual portray of Coryanthes when you see in the books or most of the pictures on the internet..Because of the wierd form, I try to capture various dimension the flower down below, This is for those who have never seen it in real life..

Ini ialah Coryanthes speciosa yang sedang kembang pada tahun baru ini.. Ini dari sudut  yang selalu ditunjukkan di dalam buku atau internet. Jadi saya cuba mempelbagaikan sudut pandangan pada gambar-gambar di bawah untuk mereka yang tidak pernah melihat bunga ni secara langsung..

 View from the top,  you can clearly see the 'bucket' collecting a fragrant liquid (to attract pollinators) dropped from a pair of  'faucet' like appendages on top of it. The 'bucket' is actually a highly modified lip of the orchid. This feature added more appeal to the look of the orchid itself and of course to us!

Pandangan atas, dapat dilihat dengan jelas bahagian yang berbentuk 'mangkuk' yang dipenuhi dengan cecair berbau wangi (untuk menarik serangga) yang menitis dari sepasang 'paip' yang terletak di atas nya. 'Mangkuk' ini ialah sebenarnya bibir orkid ini yang telah dimodifikasi untuk membantu pendebungaan. Ciri-ciri ini yang menambahkan lagi keunikan terhadap bentuknya yang juga menarik perhatian kita!

I consider this is the front view of the flower (the upper one) 

you can clearly seen the bucket from the front side.

Saya kira ini adalah pandangan hadapan (untuk bunga yang di atas sedikit tu). 

Kelihatan dengan jelas  bahagian yang berbentuk 'mangkuk' ini..

Thats all for now, I'll post of other species of Coryanthes in my collection if they are flowering in my garden soon..
